ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS IN BERLIN
Never learned as a kid? Panic when your feet leave the ground?
You're in the right place. We teach adults to swim – patiently, with kindness.
In Berlin since 2019
Around one in five adults in Germany can't really swim. Most of them just never had the chance to learn. So if you're reading this and feeling like the only one: you're not.
The lake in summer. The sea with your kids. The pool at the hotel that everyone else gets into. You don't want to become a swimmer. You want to get in, feel safe, and stay in as long as you like.
Eric, learned swimming in his 30s

He learned swimming when he was 8 years old, and immediately jumped into the Mediterranean Sea. Now he gives others that same confidence.

Nothing in the first hour will surprise you. This is the whole thing, in order.
We meet you at the entrance
You don't have to find the changing rooms on your own, or work out where to go. Your teacher will be there when you arrive.
We talk before anyone gets in
Five minutes at the edge of the pool. You say what worries you. We say what we're going to do.
We start where you can stand
Your feet stay on the floor. The water comes up to your chest, it's warm, and you can walk back out at any moment.
Your face stays dry until you decide
Putting your face in the water is a step, not a rule. It happens on the day you want it to — the third lesson, the sixth, or the last one.
We invite you to challenge yourself
Sixty minutes is plenty for a first time. You go home able to do one thing you couldn't do that morning.
We don't count lengths and we don't use a stopwatch.
Nobody gets rushed, and nobody gets told what they should already be able to do.
We'll never call you a slow learner. There are only explanations that haven't landed yet — so we'll try another one. And another.
You'll never hear "just relax" from us. If something feels scary, we slow down and work through it.
That feeling that everyone's staring at you? They aren't. Everyone's too busy with their own swim. We are watching, though. Closely. That's what you're paying us for.
Stadtbad Tiergarten (complete overhaul in 2022)
Hauptbahnhof (U5 + S3/5/7/9 + M5/M8/M10) + 10 min. walking

We have three options. All of them start in water you can stand up in. The difference is how much of the session is just about you. If you can't tell which one is yours, write us two sentences about where you are with swimming — we'll tell you which one we'd pick.

No. Most people in our classes are between 30 and 50, and the oldest so far was 72. Adults do learn this differently than children: you think more, so the first hour can feel slower. That same thinking is why adults often get further in the program than anyone expects.
Then you don't. Not in the first lesson, and not on any day you haven't decided on yourself. We build up to it in small pieces – water on your hands, then your chin, then a moment with your eyes closed – and every piece is yours to stop. Tell us about it before we get in, so we're not finding out in the water.
That's worth saying out loud, and it's not a small thing – being cold makes it much harder to learn anything. Our pool is 28 °C, which is as warm as the public pools get (most are 26 °C, which feels a lot colder), and we keep you moving rather than standing and listening. If you'd like to wear a thin neoprene suit or a swim shirt, that's completely fine.
No. Swimming isn't a strength thing – the water holds you up, and the rest is calm and technique. If you can walk across the pool and climb the ladder, you can do this class. If you have a condition that affects your breathing, joints or balance, just tell us beforehand and we'll work with it.
Whatever you feel comfortable in. A one-piece, swim shorts, a swim shirt, a burkini – all fine, and nobody in the group will be looking. Bring a towel, flip-flops for the changing room, and a €1 coin for the locker. Goggles make the first lessons easier; bring yours if you have them, and we have spares if you don't.
Yes, and plenty of people do – book two places in the same course and you'll be in the water together. One honest note: if your friend already swims well, a beginners' class isn't the right place for them, and learning next to someone who finds it easy is harder than it sounds. In that case, the private lessons tend to work better.
